Spring! The best time to throw yourself into the cacophony of bird songs! We will virtually explore (via Zoom) various East Bay locations and the birds we’re most likely to hear. We will compare similar songs of local birds as well as go over tips and hints on how to get the most out of your spring listening experience.

Although we cannot meet as a group due to COVID, we will cover 6 recommended locations for bird listening.

Six (6) Thursday evening Zoom presentations, April 8 to May 13; 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Spring is on the way! This class focuses on the sounds we hear from our local resident birds in late winter, as well as gearing up for returning spring breeders. We will learn to locate and identify birds by chirps and calls as well as songs of some species that are now starting to sing.

We’ll use Zoom to study the songs and calls of some of the birds found in our nearby parks and open spaces in the spring. With luck, we’ll get through about 30 species. We probably won’t be doing field trips because of C19. But many of these birds should be easily seen and heard on your own.

Join us on Zoom for a virtual field trip to Shadow Cliffs Regional Park near Pleasanton–an easily accessible park with lots of winter birds. It contains several habitats in a small area, so you can get good looks at many species in a short (2-1/2 mile) non-strenuous walk. On the way, we’ll see winter water and land birds, the resident Ospreys, the other likely raptors, and the herons and cormorants nesting on their rookery. We’ll also discuss practicalities like getting to the park, restrooms, and suggested birding routes.

We’ll do this class in conjunction with the end of Maureen’s shorebird class. This is the same class that we did in December. We’ll use Zoom to study the songs and calls of the 11 shorebird species that make up over 90% of the winter Bay Area shorebird population.

Sorry, no field trips because of C19. But these birds should be easily seen and heard on your own.
