NEW CLASS! September is a great time to see the invertebrates of Oakland’s Lake Merritt, as the waters are clear and many of the seasonal sea slugs have just finished laying their eggs masses. Instructor Damon Tighe will take you through a brief history of the tidal mudflat including a prospectus on its future now that the channel back to the bay is being opened back up. Damon will introduce you to many of the creatures that you can find within Lake Merritt, from sea anemones to shrimp to nudibranchs. The following Saturday there will be a chance to go find some of these invertebrates along the shores of Lake Merritt.

  • One classroom session on Tuesday September 15 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
  • One two-hour field trip on Saturday September 19. Meet at 10 a.m. at the Lake Merritt boat house.
  • Instructor: Damon Tighe
  • Limited to 15 participants. There will be a waiting list in case any participants drop out.
  • Fee: $20 for Golden Gate Bird Alliance members, $25 for non-members.
  • Location: Ed Roberts Campus, Koret Room, 3075 Adeline Street, directly across the street from Ashby BART in Berkeley. Free parking in the lot behind the center.

Gull_Fall15The new edition of The Gull newsletter for Fall 2015  is now available online. Read it to learn about how Golden Gate Bird Alliance  is fostering the next generation of conservationists through our Eco-Education program.

Golden Gate Bird Alliance has been all over the news this month!  On April 17, S.F. Chronicle columnist Chip Johnson wrote a great piece about our campaign to protect the nesting colonies of Black-crowned Night-Herons and Snowy Egrets in downtown Oakland.

And on April 21, the Chronicle ran a fun profile of GGBA member Alan Hopkins’s quest to spot 100 species of birds within walking distance of his home in San Francisco, as part of Birdathon.

Midway through Birdathon month, we’ve raised $36,000 towards our goal of $50,000 to protect Bay Area birds!

Help us get the rest of the way. We still have openings on some Birdathon field trips such as 101 Birds in East Bay Parks trip, Photo Big Day, Big Six Hours in Sonoma County, and trips to San Francisco and the Peninsula.  (Check the Birdathon trips page for details and registration.)  Sign up for a trip and raise money from friends! All donations through May 7 can count towards Birdathon.

Then join us for the Birdathon Awards Celebration on Sunday May 17 with delicious food, premium wines, door prizes, and this year some live raptor guests of honor!

Everyone who raises $100 or more will receive a free organic cotton t-shirt with the Birdathon 2015 Long-billed Curlew logo. If you raise $500, you’ll get free admission to the Awards Celebration, or two free admissions for raising$1,000. Top fundraisers will receive prizes such as overnight stays at resorts and vacation homes in top birding areas.
