Travel with GGBA

Why travel with GGBA?

1. We listen to our members and design trips to places they are interested in visiting

Not only do we visit top birding destinations in the U.S—Alaska for breeding birds, Colorado for six kinds of sage grouse, Southeast Arizona for hummingbirds—but we also go to some amazing overseas locations, including Bhutan, Uganda (where you can also see great mammals, including Mountain Gorillas) and several locations in South America (the birdiest continent in the world). So if there’s a place where you’d like to bird that we aren’t currently advertising, please contact us!

2. We have trips for birders of various abilities and priorities

Some of our trips involve hard-core birding—in Bhutan you’ll bird for 12 hours a day, often at elevation. Others are more relaxed—in Colombia, one of our home base trips,  you’ll stay at the same lodge for a week; in Portugal you’ll eat well and sleep late (at least in birding terms—breakfast at 7:30 and on the road at 8:30).

3. We choose our vendors carefully and build relationships with company owners and guides

Most of our vendors are small; a couple of them are women-owned and employ women as guides. All of our vendors are ecologically conscious and have connections to the local communities where they work.

4. Our prices are extremely competitive

We work hard to get the best deals. Our volunteers don’t accept freebies or discounts from our vendors—if you see one of use on your trip, know that we’ve paid our own way to be there. So, please, shop around (and if you do find a better deal, let us know!)

What's Your Cancellation Policy?

All of the trips we run at GGBA use commercial vendors. Some of these vendors are big international companies and some are very small local ones. But each one has its own cancellation policies that are available on the company’s website and you should familiarize yourself with their policies before you commit to a trip. If you aren’t sure about the cancellation policy, ask the vendor—they’ll be happy to share this information with you.

In some instances GGBA collects the payments for trips we advertise. In those cases, the cancellation policy is as follows:

  • If notice of cancellation is received 90 days prior to arrival date or earlier, all payments not including the deposit will be refunded
  • If notice of cancellation is received between 60 and 90 days prior to arrival date, 50% of all payment not including the deposit will be refunded.
  • If notice of cancellation is received 60 days prior to arrival date or later, no refunds will be given.

• We strongly recommend the purchase of travel insurance that covers trip cancellation/interruption.

For information, a detailed itinerary, and registration for any of our trips, please contact GGBA Travel Coordinators at travelprogram@goldengatebirds.org. Each trip includes a registration fee that benefits the work of Golden Gate Bird Alliance. You will not only enjoy a terrific vacation, but you will help support Bay Area bird conservation and education!

We welcome suggestions for future trips. If you have been on a birding trip that was especially wonderful, experienced a terrific guide, or have a suggestion of an area to visit, please email Dawn and Eric at travelprogram@goldengatebirds.org

We urge you to purchase travel insurance for all trips. Click here for more information.

Know the cancellation policy for any trip you wish to join.

We often get questions about tipping. Click here for our advice.
